A 2.5-mile (4km) loop trail around the park winds through thick forests and crosses broad meadows and high, windswept bluffs with spectacular views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains. Wildlife is abundant here, with bald eagles regularly seen in the treetops, as well as sightings of falcons, herons, beavers, and foxes. In 1982, a mountain lion was encountered in Discovery Park.
The Daybreak Star Cultural Center £ [map] (tel: 206-285 4425; Mon–Fri 9am–5pm; www.unitedindians.org; free) is a local attraction sponsoring Native American events, and exhibiting contemporary Indian art. Discovery Park also has picnic areas, playgrounds, tennis, and basketball courts.
Fishermen’s Terminal $ [map]
Fishermen’s Terminal, on W Thurman Street on Magnolia’s northern side, provides an opportunity to admire the boats of a major fishing fleet. This is the home port for more than 700 commercial fishing vessels, many of which fish for salmon, halibut, or crab in Alaskan waters. Visitors can sample the day’s catch at the restaurants, or by purchasing from the fish market at the terminal.
